** Border Angels host Q&A about DACA under Biden Administration
------------------------------------------------------------
Attorney answered questions on Instagram Live

By Rina Nakano

"SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Humanitarian Aid group, "Border Angels," ([link removed]) hosted an Instagram Live ([link removed]) session Tuesday explaining the DACA program under President Biden's administration.

For many undocumented people, President Biden's Executive Order ([link removed]) fortifying the DACA program was a big sigh of relief. But some said the future of undocumented immigrants is still uncertain.

"It's been such a heartache the last few years," Dulce Garcia, Immigration Lawyer with the Border Angels, said.

Garcia said the inauguration of President Biden was the start of a new chapter of Immigration Reform.

"I think we have the right momentum to finally get comprehensive immigration passed," Garcia said."

** Familias Reunidas
Bond Program
------------------------------------------------------------

Click the image to watch video!

The Familias Reunidas Immigration Bond Fund posted its first bond on January 7, 2020. Since then, we have helped free 69 immigrants and asylum seekers from the Otay Mesa, Adelanto and Imperial County for-profit immigration prisons. Because of you, this program has helped dozens of people from over 18 countries of origin.

Here is this short piece of art that was created to continue raising awareness of the complex immigration system that disproportionately affects migrants of color, and from which private corporations profit from.

Every donation helps mothers, fathers and loved ones who are still detained and every dollar goes towards freeing someone from detention.

Border Angels pledges to end family separation one family at a time – will you?

Thank you to the three artists, Aysia Segura, Gavin South, and Cristina Ibarrando, as well as professor Olivia Taussig-Moore and the Pratt Institute, who created this video. They made this all possible!

** Thank you SDIRC!
------------------------------------------------------------
We want to take a moment to thank SDIRC (San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium) for nominating us for the SDIRC Awards. It was an honor to be considered alongside so many organizations fighting and protecting immigrant rights.

This past year, having the opportunity to sit on their board, we were able to organize and provide assistance to our immigrant community exponentially. We were part of several efforts in the county to stop ICE transfers and collaboration with the Sheriff’s office, as well assisting hundreds of families through the Immigrant Relief Fund, and so much more.

We are looking forward to continue building a better future for our communities alongside our partners and friends at SDIRC.

** #DefendAsylum
------------------------------------------------------------

Today, we along with 97 organizations along the US and Mexico border sent a letter to the Biden-Harris administration urging them to restore our asylum system to one that treats migrants with humanity and respect.

At this critical juncture, we cannot simply roll back the unjust policies of the Trump administration, but must repair the harm inflicted upon people seeking asylum, design humane policies and build the social infrastructure necessary to truly welcome those who seek refuge from persecution, with dignity – not cruelty.

The time for change is now. We cannot wait any longer while those who fled persecution face constant violence, danger and fear.

Kataleya is a transgender woman who fled Honduras in search of refuge. Throughout her time in Mexico she has faced persecution and violence. When she asked the US for asylum, the US closed the door on her, forcing her to sign up on a waitlist that clearly violates the right to seek asylum and leaving her no option but to keep waiting in Tijuana. She has been trapped here for two years and is calling on the US to end this injustice and let her seek asylum safely in the US.

LGBTQ+ people are 97 times more likely to be victimized within detention than other detainees, according to a 2017 Center for American Progress analysis.

Community organizations based in Tijuana are calling on the Biden-Harris administration to take the following actions:

- Fully end MPP and the asylum waitlist
- End Title 42 expulsions
- End immigration detention (including GPS monitoring, a form of digital incarceration)
- End the Asylum Cooperative Agreements

Juan fled Guatemala to seek safety in the United States, but like too many others, the Trump administration turned their back on him. Juan is on the illegal "asylum waitlist" that forces people fleeing persecution to wait for long periods of time in cities like Tijuana, where migrants face discrimination and violence like what Juan has survived. Migrant persons & rights organizations in Tijuana, San Diego and beyond are demanding for:
* a full end to "Remain in Mexico" or MPP, which means all people waiting in Mexico under MPP are allowed to continue their cases in the US in freedom
* an end to the illegal asylum waitlist under the "metering policy"
* an end to Title 42 Expulsions
* an end to all Asylum Cooperative Agreements (Safe Third Country Agreements)
* an end to immigration detention and digital incarceration (GPS shackles)

On January 27 we observed International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is a day designated by the UN that commemorates the victims of the holocaust, and the genocide of 6 million Jews, disabled persons, LGBTQ+ individuals, and many other victims of Nazism.

While many of us may never personally know the tremendous pain and suffering felt by those affected by the Holocaust, it is our duty to learn from it. We must never allow hate to be at forefront and denounce any form of it. The majority of Border Angels’ work is what we call “active love." This includes not fearing the unknown and doing the work to protect and advocate for those who have been marginalized and targeted, like the immigrant community.

Our actions must be centered in love.

With the recommendation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, we convey the urgent responsibility we all share to protect the lessons and legacy of Holocaust history and to defend the truth. We recommend you visit their website (

** DOJ Rescinds ‘Zero Tolerance’ Immigration Rule Used For Family Separation
------------------------------------------------------------
The Trump administration used its prosecution policy to split up immigrant families. The Biden administration just rescinded it.

By Michael Balsamo and Colleen Long

"WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Tuesday rescinded a Trump-era memo that established a “zero tolerance” enforcement policy for migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, which resulted in thousands of family separations.

Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson issued the new memo to federal prosecutors across the nation, saying the department would return to its longstanding previous policy and instructing prosecutors to act on the merits of individual cases.

“Consistent with this longstanding principle of making individualized assessments in criminal cases, I am rescinding — effective immediately — the policy directive,” Wilkinson wrote."

** Biden directive combats racism against Asian Americans amid COVID-19 pandemic
------------------------------------------------------------
The Asian American community faced a rise in hate crimes during the pandemic.

By Deena Zaru

"President Joe Biden signed an executive action Tuesday directing federal agencies to combat xenophobia against the Asian American Pacific Islander community, amid a rise in hate crimes and harassment ([link removed]) over coronavirus' suspected origins in Wuhan, China ([link removed]) .

"Today, I'm directing federal agencies to combat the resurgence of xenophobia, particularly against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, that we've seen skyrocket during this pandemic. This is unacceptable and it's un-American," Biden said in remarks at the White House.

"I've asked the Department of Justice to strengthen its partnership with the Asian American Pacific Islander community to prevent those hate crimes. I've also asked the Department of Health and Human Services to put out best practices for combatting xenophobia in our national response to COVID.""

** Biden delays orders to reverse Trump-era immigration changes, create task force for separated families
------------------------------------------------------------

By Camilo Montoya-Galvez and Ed O'keefe

"President Biden is delaying by at least a few days a series of executive actions on immigration that were anticipated as early as this week, including the reversal of Trump-era asylum policies and a plan to reunite migrant families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, two people familiar with the ongoing deliberations told CBS News.

A specific reason for the delay was not clear. A document circulating Washington obtained by CBS News that outlined Mr. Biden's expected early executive actions indicated that several orders on immigration were originally set to be issued Friday, but it also stressed the timetable was subject to change.

A memo released by White House chief of staff Ron Klain just before Mr. Biden's inauguration also said a specific plan to reunite migrant families would come before February 1. The White House did not comment on Mr. Biden's plans."

** Meet the 7 congresswomen who are steering Biden's immigration agenda in the House
------------------------------------------------------------
By Rebecca Morin

"In one of her first days in Congress nearly two decades ago, Rep. Linda Sánchez remembers being told by a friend on Capitol Hill that there are two types of lawmakers: a workhorse or a showhorse.

Sánchez said she's the kind of lawmaker who wants to get things done.

Now, the California congresswoman has taken the lead in putting together a group of seven women, who she described as “workhorses,” who will shepherd the legislative efforts to get President Joe Biden’s immigration reform bill through the House of Representatives.

"I can unequivocally say that every woman that is part of this 'Closers' group is a workhorse," Sánchez said in an interview with USA TODAY. "They're not doing it for the glory or for the credit. They are in it to get (immigration reform) done once and for all. It's long overdue."
