Hi friend,
The Washington Post: “President Biden is trying to shake a Trump hangover in the federal government by acting to remove some holdovers and install his own appointees, but a quiet push to salt federal agencies with Trump loyalists is complicating the new president's effort to turn the page.”
That's right -- by installing political allies in permanent positions throughout the civil service, Donald Trump tried to ensure that Trumpism remains permanently ingrained in the U.S. government. And the Biden administration is having trouble sniffing them out.
The data show that Trump moved dozens of his appointees into career jobs during the first ten months of 2020 -- and there's no telling how many he followed up with after it became clear his time in the White House was winding down. Most of the agencies didn't even announce the moves.
What's more, the Post reports, officials who have successfully “burrowed” into their departments can be hard to get rid of, especially if they have made it through the probationary hiring period. Once they're installed, they're shrouded in protections for career employees.
Look, we're becoming seriously worried about this. Biden is working quickly to root out Trump's appointees in all corners of the government -- but if we don't even know how many there are or where they remain, there's no telling what damage they could inflict in the coming months and years.
