This just in: Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio will not run for re-election in 2022.

We'll be brief. With Democrats holding on to a zero-seat majority in the Senate this term, we need to do everything we can to ensure that the margin grows next year.

The odds are already against us -- it's common wisdom the president's party is on track to lose seats during midterm elections. And if Mitch McConnell takes back the majority leader's gavel, you know everything Joe Biden and Kamala Harris want to do goes down the drain -- from economic relief and health care reform to judicial nominations. Absolutely everything.

Just because it's an uphill battle doesn't mean it's one we can't win. And Sen. Portman's decision to stand down could be the crucial opening we've been searching for. When an incumbent as well-known as Portman leaves the race, everything changes.

This will be a brawl to the finish line -- starting today. Republicans have a deep bench in Ohio, from the extremely popular Jim Jordan, a top Trump lieutenant, to Lt. Gov. Jon Husted and former treasurer Josh Mandel. And they've all had a head start to create their strategies.

Democrats have some exciting potential candidates as well, like former presidential candidate Rep. Tim Ryan, former state health director Amy Acton, and State House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes. But we are going to need absolutely everything we can to win this race.

And the truth is, everyone on our side is exhausted after our monumental victories in the presidential election and in Georgia. Our own resources are exhausted. The Republicans are already working full steam to win this race and we haven't even reached the starting line.
