John, did you see this?
In about three months, the Census Bureau will release state population counts from the 2020 Census, which will then be used to determine each state's share of votes in the House of Representatives for the next decade.
Unfortunately — based on some early numbers — New York could lose either one or two of its representatives, which means that Jamaal could lose his seat just months after his swearing in to Congress.
As conversations around redistricting begin in a matter of months, we need to get ready for whatever outcome comes our way — including a potential fight to keep Jamaal in Congress.
That's why it's important to make sure our fundraising continues to be as strong as possible. Strong fundraising shows voters, political pundits, and insiders that our movement is popular and here to stay.
Since 70% of the House seats in New York are held by Democrats, losing seats or having our district split looks likely. This means we could face some serious challengers in a potential primary election — especially since Jamaal is a first-term Congressman.
The Trump administration made every attempt to sabotage the Census and unfairly undercut communities that are largely Black and brown like ours, all to gain more power in Washington. And because of gerrymandering and redlining, they might succeed.
Our people-powered movement continues to be the best line of defense against these deplorable efforts. If we want to make sure Jamaal can stay in Congress, we're going to need your help right now.
In solidarity,
Team Bowman
