Change won’t come easily: Asylum-seekers are still at risk of dangerous returns

Dear Friend,
Over the last four years, the Department of Homeland Security unlawfully turned away and deported ([link removed]) immigrant children seeking protection, asylum-seekers with pending appeals ([link removed]) , and people who took action to complain ([link removed]) against unsafe conditions and human rights violations in ICE jails. Because of these unwarranted deportations during a global pandemic, the Biden-Harris administration took action on day one, and placed a moratorium on deportations so that officials could conduct a top-to-bottom review of DHS policies. Under the moratorium, with a few exceptions,
everyone with a deportation order would not be deported for 100 days.
Yet just days after the executive order was signed, a federal judge in Texas issued a temporary restraining order ([link removed]) that blocks the deportation moratorium for those with final orders of removal, leaving thousands once again vulnerable to deportation.
This is just the first example of the fight we should expect from anti-immigrant officials and institutions. They’ve been clear about their intention to block reforms to immigration law and policy. As we begin the work to undo the harm of the past four years and create a system that treats children fairly, we expect a fight every step of the way. Now is not the time to let our guard down. Please support our work in Washington and in the courts to protect immigrant children from deportation. ([link removed])
Thank you,
Jennifer Nagda
