Dear John,

When a governor general leaves office, the prime minister needs to cut off the expense account.

That’s a pretty important message. Where would you stick that reminder? Maybe on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s fridge so he sees it when he’s getting milk for breakfast or a cold one in the evening? That would work, but it would be tough to arrange.

You can do one better: put that message on four bus shelters surrounding the Prime Minister’s Office and in front of the House of Commons.

Here’s what the ad will look like:

This is a rendition of what it will look like.

You can make sure every staffer at the Prime Minister’s Office will have to see these ads. Members of Parliament will see it. And the prime minister’s motorcade rolls right by these spots.

Everything is nearly set to go. The ad is designed and the installers are waiting for our call. The price tag is $4,126. We just need 165 supporters to chip in $25 each and we’ll tell them to put it up ASAP.

You can fix this problem that should have been fixed long ago. Julie Payette will be eligible to bill taxpayers for more than $200,000 in office expenses every year for the rest of her life after stepping down as governor general. Adrienne Clarkson has already billed taxpayers for more than a million dollars since she left Rideau Hall.

The prime minister said he’d study the problem two years ago. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s investigative reporter, James Wood, got a copy of the study. It was worse than we thought. It showed a former governor general’s estate can keep submitting office expenses for six months after they die. Obviously, these expense accounts are out of hand and need to go.

You can make sure Trudeau gets the message by putting it on a big sign right outside his office.

Thanks for all you do – it’s making a difference.

P.S.: We’ve been able to place a hold on these bus shelters for a few days, but we need to give them the green light as soon as we can. You can help put the ad up and turn up the heat on the Prime Minister by chipping in here: https://www.taxpayer.com/donate/surround-the-prime-ministers-office-with-bus-shelter-ads
