Dear John,

This is a year of hopeful change. Last week we welcomed the new Biden Administration that will advance justice for LGBTQ+ students, creating an extraordinary opportunity to build on our progress and win new victories for a new generation. Together, the visionary GLSEN community, including supporters like you, will advocate for bold and necessary policies in schools, states, and nationwide.

To make a world that the GLSEN community wants to see in 2021, we’re putting our focus on three key priorities: [[link removed]]

1. Removing barriers to educational opportunity caused by anti-LGBTQ+ bias in K-12 learning communities

2. Affirming LGBTQ+ identities in K-12 learning communities through supportive actions

3. Centering equity in K-12 learning communities for LGBTQ+ students who have multiple intersecting marginalized identities and lived experiences

We’ll start at the school level by making sure students [[link removed]] and educators [[link removed]] know their rights under the Biden Administration’s executive order on nondiscrimination protections. At the state level, we are working to pass affirming legislation, including LGBTQ+-inclusive curricular standards bills and opposing discriminatory bills to advance our mission to promote positive school transformation where every student can thrive and reach their full potential.

Finally, our new Congress has the power to advance GLSEN’s mission of ensuring that K-12 schools protect LGBTQ+ students, educators, and staff — from passing pivotal bills like the Safe Schools Improvement Act, the Equality Act, and the Counseling Not Criminalization Act to increasing funding for COVID-19 emergency relief that addresses the needs of LGBTQ+ students and educators.

After a year of reckoning with systemic racism, tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, and the beginning of a new administration that affirms LGBTQ+ folx, GLSEN is ready to do the work. Head to the GLSEN website for a more extensive look at our 2021 legislative agenda. [[link removed]]

Together we will build power and better our education system so that LGBTQ+ students and teachers can experience safe and inclusive K-12 education. Our time is now.

Sincerely,
Aaron Ridings
