The Global Gag Rule has been repealed

With some positive news to start the year, U.S President Joe Biden has now removed the "Global Gag Rule", implemented by President Trump (and every Republican president before him). This policy blocked any organisation which supports safe abortion access from being able to access U.S funding and has caused untold harm in the Global South.

SAAF stands by our partners in celebrating the repeal of this policy, but also calling for its permanent removal through the Global HER Act. You can read about the Global Gag Rule and the impact it has had on SAAF grantee CEHURD here ([link removed]) .

At the end of last year, an external consultancy firm carried out an evaluation of SAAF's performance from 2017-2020. Thank you to all those who participated in the interviews.

We were delighted to see that 93% of our grantee partners said they are satisfied with how SAAF manages funds and that grantees consider SAAF to be “very respectful, trusting, and focused on listening to and understanding grantees’ needs and ideas”.

We have shared the report findings with all grantee partners and SAAF donors and will embed the recommendations in our work moving forward.

‘Changes happened because of SAAF. Before there was much stigma, we started working boldly on this, speaking out on abortion as a human rights issue, and people in the communities started asking for and about abortion.’ - SAAF grantee partner

Grantee partner spotlight - Somali Gender Justice

SAAF has been funding Somali Gender Justice since January 2020. We are supporting their innovative work to investigate the support available for women who have experienced sexual violence in Puntland.

In a strongly Islamic and conservative environment, they are working sensitively to "Break the Silence" on the need for rape survivors to access non-judgemental reproductive health care, including safe abortion.

Director Sareda Hassan has written about their initial research findings and recommendations here ([link removed]) .

SAAF is hosted by IPPF. If you wish to report anything which concerns you about our work, or the work of our grantee partners (such as abuse, fraud, malpractice) please consider using the confidential external incident reporting service IPPF SafeReport ([link removed]) .
