** South African Variant

A highly transmissible variant of the coronavirus first identified in South Africa has infected two people in South Carolina with no travel history, state officials announced today. These are the first cases in the United States involving the B. 1.351 variant, and the patients’ lack of travel or a connection to one another suggests that the variant is spreading in the community following an undetected introduction, as the

** Iran’s Nuclear Deal Demands

The United States should act first by returning to world powers’ 2015 nuclear deal with Iran that it ditched in 2018, the Iranian foreign minister tweeted today after Washington demanded Tehran reverse its breaches of the pact first, as Reuters reports ([link removed]) .

Iraqi security forces have killed a senior commander of the Islamic State group, the prime minister said today, a week after the rare, twin suicide bombing by IS militants killed dozens in Baghdad, as the AP reports ([link removed]) .

It’s a smiley day at CSIS, especially among my team in External Relations. We were ranked as the #1 think tank in the world for “Best External Relations/Public Engagement Program” by the University of Pennsylvania’s 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index, an annual report by UPenn’s Dr. James McGann. CSIS was also recognized as a Center of Excellence for Defense and National Security, ranked #1 for our regional programs, and our Global Health program was ranked #2 in the world.
