Trump recently issued a thinly veiled threat to the Republican senators considering convicting him following his impeachment in the House: Vote to acquit him or face the wrath of his newly formed Patriot Party.
A senior advisor to the former president, Jason Miller, tweeted that “it's completely up to Republican Senators if this the creation of a 3rd party is something that becomes more serious." And the Washington Post reported that Trump told his aides to prepare election challenges against GOP representatives who stood against his baseless accusations of voter fraud.
We took on a Trump-centered Republican party and won -- in the House, Senate, and White House -- so we know we can take on the Patriot Party too. But we're worried that Republican senators will want to keep their seats more than they want to hold Trump accountable and stand up for our democracy.
Trump could get off scot-free because, as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stated: “The vast majority of Republican voters, volunteers, and donors are no longer loyal to the GOP, Republican Party, and candidates just because they have an R by their name. Their loyalty now lies with Donald J Trump.”
Republican officials should vote with their consciences, not out of fear of Trump's base. We wish we could assure our elected officials that the Patriot Party won't be a threat in elections to come -- but we're already short of the funds we'll use to ensure progressive victories in 2022.
