** UN Human Rights Review Highlights Nepal’s Shortfalls on Implementing Indigenous Rights

On January 21, 2021, Nepal’s human rights record was examined for the third time by the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva. Indigenous Peoples’ issues were addressed at a higher level than in previous years. Read more. ([link removed])

** Reclaiming What Belongs to Us: Khoi & San at Table Mountain, Cape Town South Africa

Since October 2020, Khoi & San Tribes have been at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, reclaiming traditional lands. On January 1, 12 people were arrested for exercising their rights to cultural practices. Watch video. ([link removed])

Indigenous Peoples in Brazil want the world to know that their rights are being violated on their own territories. The Brazilian State is violating their rights to a healthy environment and therefore their rights to to life, health, food, water, sanitation, property, private life, culture, and non-discrimination, among others. ** Chortí Community Members Threatened by Mining Company and Municipal Corporation in Guatemala

Indigenous leaders and authorities from the community of Lelá Obraje and Lelá Chaco, Chiquimula, Guatemala, recently denounced threats by the mining company Cantera el Porvenir and the Municipal Corporation of Camotán Chiquimula, for resisting the installation of a new mining project. In 2020, a grant from our Indigenous Community Media Fund was awarded to Awá Pambilar Center to produce radio spots related to the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19 by four radio stations of the Awá Peoples of Ecuador and Colombia: Radio Ampara Su from Ecuador, Radio Camawari, Radio La Voz de los Awá, and Radio Ñampi Telembi from Colombia.
