We can’t let Biden appoint Big Tech lobbyists in roles meant to hold Big Tech accountable
John,
This is bad news: reports are flagging that the Biden/Harris administration has been looking at Silicon Valley executives and lobbyists for key governmental positions.1,2
Companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon need to be held accountable for their role in eroding our democracy. But appointing their friends and former staff in government roles will all but ensure these corporations can continue to do enormous harm with total impunity.
Reining in Big Tech’s unchecked power should be at the top of Biden’s priorities. Big Tech’s surveillance capitalist business model is fundamentally incompatible with democracy and human rights, and these companies were responsible for amplifying the hate and lies that led to the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol building.
The decisions we make about the role of Big Tech in our society over the next four years will define our future. We must demand that the incoming administration reverse course immediately and nominate individuals who are committed to taking meaningful action to reign in the power of Big Tech, defend our democracy and protect vulnerable communities.
The good news is that there are some really good candidates in the conversation too—people who would be far more likely to stand up to Big Tech and fight for people.3 And mounting pressure is already making the administration reconsider these appointments. We can win on this! But in order to win, you need to act.
