Dear John, When it comes to gun violence in Wisconsin, 2020 was the worst. It's absolutely clear that we can't wait for a legislature -- that has been nonresponsive on this issue for years -- to grow a heart. That's why WAVE, our organizational partners, and many of our supporters sent a letter to Governor Evers asking for him to take two important actions: -
Include in his budget funding for Community-level gun violence prevention programs, such as violence interruption, hospital-based interventions, and trauma response programs. -
Create a task force on gun violence prevention to develop and promote a comprehensive set of policy recommendations. At a minimum, the task force should include researchers, citizens from deeply impacted communities, social workers, and leaders from the fields of public health, domestic violence prevention, suicide prevention, and gun violence prevention. The idea of the governor taking steps that we know (based on evidence from other states) will help prevent gun violence fills us with emotion (or, as the cool younger people would say, gives us all the feels). In a word or short phrase, let us know how you would feel if Governor Evers includes funding for community-violence prevention programs in his budget and creates a task force on gun violence prevention. We will compile all of your submissions and create a word cloud to share with you and with our governor and lieutenant governor. Making sure that the governor knows just how important his actions are to the people of Wisconsin is an essential next step. So, please, tell us how you would feel about the governor including funding for community-level gun violence prevention programs in his budget and creating a task force on gun violence prevention. Thanks, Heidi Rose, Program Director WAVE Educational Fund P.S. If you haven't sent an email to Governor Evers with these requests yet, you can do so now. |
