Janet Yellen, our new Treasury Secretary, wants to tackle the inequality that the pandemic has exacerbated. “It's been particularly brutal in its impact on minorities and on women,” she told Congress during her confirmation hearing.
Yellen is the first woman to ever lead the Treasury Department, and she's pushing for a $1.9 trillion stimulus package -- including $1,400 dollar checks for struggling Americans and their families, $160 billion for a national vaccine program, and $170 billion to get our kids back to school, safely.
But Republicans in Congress are trying to put the brakes on the economic stimulus our country desperately needs, with Senator Chuck Grassley telling Yellen that “now is not the time to enact a laundry list of liberal, structural economic reforms.”
