John,
You and I both know that the past four years under the Trump administration have done immense damage to our democracy, our norms, and our institutions.
Not only did Trump and his sycophants in Congress do everything in their power to sabotage vote-by-mail in an election year impacted by a pandemic, but they also spread lies and misinformation, fostered distrust in our free and fair elections, propagated voter fraud conspiracy theories, and tried to throw out the votes of thousands of Americans so they could maintain their grip on power.
We also know voter suppression is nothing new, and for Republicans, it’s a means to an end. Over the years, Republicans have passed voter ID laws in states across the country, purged voter rolls on flimsy pretenses, gerrymandered districts to their advantage, and taken other measures to keep people from easily making their voices heard at the polls.
And since the 2010 Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United case, dark money has infiltrated our politics, taking power from the people and handing it to corporate special interests and the super wealthy.
Our democracy is in desperate need of repair, John, and that’s why House Democrats are working to pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act.
This comprehensive legislation was the first bill we introduced in this new Congress, because we believe it’s imperative that we begin to restore our democracy and strengthen voting rights immediately. How? By making Election Day a federal holiday, establishing national automatic voter registration, ending partisan gerrymandering, requiring disclosure of high dollar donors, and so much more.
Mitch McConnell may have blocked this bill the last time we introduced it, but with a newly elected Democratic majority in the House and Senate, we can get this done for the people in 2021.
Add your name to join me in supporting the For the People Act by becoming a citizen cosponsor of this resolution to restore our democracy now.
Thanks for always fighting for our democracy alongside me,
Adam
