Yesterday was the single biggest day for climate action in more than 10 years

Friend — I hope you're following this — yesterday, President Biden announced a series of sweeping executive orders on the climate crisis, environmental justice, and the important role of science. They cover ambitious goals for clean energy and emissions reductions, pausing offshore drilling, advancing environmental justice, commiting to protect public lands and waters, eliminating fossil fuel subsidies, and restoring science's integrity and place in policy-making, among other critical actions.

The news is huge — yesterday was the most important day for climate action in more than a decade.

Included in yesterday's news was a pause on issuing new oil and gas leases on public lands and waters. It's a huge reversal — Trump had been handing out leases and permits left and right in the final days of his administration.

We're now facing a major showdown with the oil industry. They've ramped up their lobbying and PR teams in response — putting serious pressure on leaders in Washington to reverse course.

We need to fight back twice as hard. But the truth is — after months of must-win political fights with the Trump administration, resources are tight. We need your help to pull this off.

We're trying to raise $30,000 more before the end of the month to reach our 2021 Membership Drive goal. If everyone reading this right now pitched in — even $5 — we'd blow through that goal in minutes. So we're asking:

Friend — stopping the giveaways in our broken public lands leasing system is long overdue. Oil and gas companies have been allowed to pick public land they want to drill on, purchase leases for cheap, glide through the permitting process, and pay pennies back to the public.

No one wins but oil and gas CEOs. Now that their handouts are being taken away — they're going ballistic.

Here's the problem: the executive order halting leasing is temporary. In the meantime, if the oil industry spends the next year pouring resources into PR and lobbying efforts (as they've been doing) — they're going to plant a false narrative that this hurts job growth.

It's total BS, but if people believe it, we're going to end up back to business as usual. Too much is at stake here to let that happen, friend. We have a shot at a new era for public lands: that turns them into assets in the fight against climate change, makes access to nature more equitable, boosts the outdoor recreation and renewable energy economies, and reduces pollution from fossil fuel development.

Friend — the oil and gas industries' lies can't go unanswered. We're anticipating major opposition to each and every part of Biden's executive orders. We need your help.

Today, the best thing you can do is to renew your LCV membership for 2021. All it takes is $5. As part of our Membership Drive, a group of donors will triple match your contribution — and any contribution you make this year. It's an incredible way to build power in 2021.

We can win this fight — but it's only going to happen if the environmental movement shows up during the moments that matter. This is one of those moments, and we need you with us.

Thank you for your commitment, friend — and for everything you do for the environment.

Onward,
