Dear John,

Government U-turns on scrapping workers’ rights.

Thanks to pressure from supporters like you, our rights are safe - for now.

Only last week, the Business Secretary announced plans to “review” workers’ rights, which had been protected by EU law. But thousands of supporters like you took action.

In just a week, we received nearly 17,000 signatures on our open letter to Boris Johnson, and we sent hundreds of messages to MPs, calling for workers’ rights to be upheld. You were one of those people. Under that pressure, the government has backed off.

Despite the protestation, we always knew the government would try to use our exit from the EU to cut standards. But we must remain vigilant, so that we can hold them accountable and uphold our rights.

Your actions this week have helped protect all our employment rights. Whenever the government breaks their commitments to uphold our standards, we want to be there to hold them to account. If you’d like to help us do that, please make a donation.

The EU’s Working Time Directive shielded UK workers from unsafe working conditions. Like many of our protections, EU law provided a baseline below which the UK could not legislate. It was a guarantee on our rights and standards.

But now we’ve left the transition period, the only guarantee we have is the flimsy promises of our government.

During the 2019 general election, Boris Johnson repeatedly pledged we would not dip below EU standards. But at the first opportunity, in the midst of an economic crisis, his government jumped at the chance to strip away our rights.

We need better guarantees than the fickle promises of our government.

That’s why I’m asking you to donate. Help us be a line of defence. Help us hold the government to account, and maintain your hard-won rights outside of the EU. Donate today.

Thanks to your work, the UK will keep protections like the 48-hour working week limit, holiday pay entitlements and mandated work breaks.

Today shows us that we can make a difference. It shows us the government will listen to concerted pressure.

But it also shows us we have to remain vigilant, and not let up our fight against this untrustworthy government.

Best wishes,

Naomi Smith,
