Hi John,
Let’s face it, the odds are stacked against us.
But luckily, the climate movement is one of the most powerful and inspiring movements I’ve ever had the privilege to be part of. And I’m so glad you’re part of it too, John.
This movement is strong, but it can, and needs to be even stronger. It’s made up by millions of people across the world - all with our own unique skills, experience and knowledge. Through connecting with each other and sharing this knowledge, we can make this movement even more powerful by ensuring we focus our efforts where they’ll have the biggest impact. So, John, I need your help.
At 350.org, we went into 2020 with firm campaign plans in place. But then, like everyone else, we had to shift priorities to respond to the pandemic. As governments spent vast amounts of money on pandemic recovery, we focused on campaigning for this money to go to people and communities, not polluting companies. We held digital skill sharing sessions and came up with new ways of taking action online.
There has never been a doubt in my mind that the strength of this movement is in its people - people like you and me. The events of last year only strengthened this belief. As pandemic restrictions have put an end to marches and protests, and climate action has had to move online, it’s been easy to feel isolated. But I want this email to be a reminder that this isn’t the case. We are part of a movement of millions.
Because one thing’s for sure: it’s only by working with each other that we can build a movement powerful enough to take on the fossil fuel industry and deliver a just recovery for all. We’re all in this together.
In solidarity,
Matilda and the 350.org Europe team
