On Tuesday, 45 of the 50 Republicans in the United States Senate tried to weasel out of their obligation to conduct an impeachment trial of Donald Trump by endorsing the sham that holding Trump accountable now that he is out of office is somehow unconstitutional (which it is not).
- Nevermind that the Senate could not begin an impeachment trial while Trump was still in office because Mitch McConnell put the Senate in recess after the January 6 insurrection that Trump incited.
- Some of these Republican senators actually believe, and actively perpetuate, the Big Lie that Trump won an election he lost by a substantial margin (though none of them have managed to explain how that makes inciting an insurrection any less impeachable).
- But most of them are just political cowards. They are choosing to let Trump and his MAGA adherents intimidate them into abdicating their duty to uphold the Constitution and defend the very essence of our democracy.
- That’s why it is absolutely critical for every Republican senator to hear from constituents like you — so they know there will be a political price to pay if they don’t convict Trump and bar him from ever serving in federal office again.
So — whether your senators are Democrats, Republicans, or Independents — pick up the phone RIGHT NOW.
It’s really easy:
1. Dial the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. (Be patient, the Capitol is getting a lot of calls these days.)
2. When you get through to the switchboard, follow the prompts to be connected to the office of one of your senators.
3. Leave this quick message on your senator’s voicemail (or with whichever staffer answers the phone):
I am a constituent and I am calling to urge my senator to defend our democracy by voting to convict Donald Trump.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for your other senator.
5. Reply to this email to let us know if you called your senators.
That’s it!
And don’t worry, you won’t have to get into a debate with your senator (or anyone else) — you’ll just leave a message.
Call (202) 224-3121 right now!
Thank you for taking action.

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
