Hi John,

Joe Biden is pushing a sweeping immigration overhaul on to Congress, with one important section: Removing the word “alien” from US immigration laws.

Donald Trump used the dehumanizing term to warn Americans to fear immigrants, up until his last day. Jeff Sessions, the architect of the family-separation policy, required prosecutors to refer to undocumented immigrants as “illegal aliens.” And federal officers in the administration encouraged Americans to scope out “removable aliens.”

There's a reason for that. Words shape our perception of each other, and for four years the GOP has weaponized these terms to instill fear in immigrant communities. To tell immigrants they don't belong.

Republicans and conservative groups have already expressed opposition to Biden's bill, but we think it is a step in the right direction. We believe that now, more than ever, representation and inclusion matter. But today we need to hear from you. Please tell us simply:

Do words matter?
