I recently read a story about a woman, under the stress of the pandemic, work, and motherhood requested that her job be cut back to 80% so she could take on more of the work at home and ensure her children didn’t fall too far behind in school.

Her boss told her no.

Now, before you get upset and think he’s a monster, hear his reasoning -

He said no because he didn’t want her to become another statistic in this pandemic. Another woman losing gains, falling behind.

He told her that she should help her kids if they need it but that she would not receive a pay cut.

He told her that she should step away to do things in her house if she needs to and she would not be thought to be slacking off.

This is a tiny example of what an allyship looks like.

And I, for one, can only hope that stories like this are playing out across this country as we continue to live through these trying times.

When it comes to being an ally in the maternal health space where I work, it also begins with listening. Hearing what the problems are and offering a new solution that lifts up those in need.

Last year, we heard our community raising their voices and their hands - they wanted to become advocates for maternal health so that they could impact change in their states and hometowns.

We met that need and provided them with an advocacy toolkit and showed them time and time again how to show up for women and for moms.

This year, as our momentum grows, we’re listening to moms and health workers and we’re ready to push this new administration to take bold action on behalf of them all. We want to see more - we deserve more.

I want to invite you to join March for Moms this year as a monthly supporter. Your sustaining contribution will help us do just that. [[link removed]]
