"We call on you to uphold your commitment by swiftly signing this package into law, so we can come together to deliver urgently needed relief and opportunity for California seniors, veterans, working families, and vulnerable community members who need a safe, stable, affordable place to live."

Dear Members and Partners,

NPH has joined with affordable housing and homelessness advocacy leaders from around the state to pen an open letter to Governor Gavin Newsom calling on him to sign into law critical housing bills from the 2019 legislative session. Together, these bills are a strong example of the "3Ps" approach to affordable housing solutions; they collectively embrace Production, Preservation, and tenant Protections

Now that we've reached the end of the session, we must ensure that our advocacy efforts have a real impact by making sure the Governor takes action and signs these bills. Once the Governor signs these bills, we'll have a unique opportunity to build upon this great momentum! We'll be right back at work to advance even further progress for our neighbors and families who desperately need relief from our state's housing challenges. The bills that await the Governor's signature include:

  • AB 1482: Keeps families in their homes by limiting extreme or unreasonable rent increases and prevents arbitrary evictions.

  • AB 1486: Strengthens our Surplus Land Act to transform unused public land into a public good, making more public land available for affordable homes and open spaces that benefit our communities.

  • SB 330: Creates more affordable housing opportunities for California families and workers by ensuring local governments each maintain consistent rules and regulations.

  • SB 329: Stops housing discrimination by prohibiting landlords from rejecting prospective renters just because they get government assistance to pay their rent.

  • SB 5: Creates innovative, critically needed funding for local governments to create more affordable homes for community members.

  • AB 1763: Reduces obstacles to building affordable housing developments near transit.

  • AB 1487: Allows the Bay Area to join together to find Bay Area-specific solutions to its housing affordability needs. New regional funding and programs will strengthen the region with more affordable homes and protections for longtime residents.

NPH, along with Housing California, California Housing ConsortiumCalifornia Housing Partnership CorporationSouthern California Association of Non Profit Housing, Sacramento Housing Alliance, and The Kennedy Commission, have signed on this letter urging the Governor to take action now. Read the letter here and please share with your networks!
