WOBURN -- Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Jim Lyons denounced the dismissal of Dedham High School football coach David Flynn over what school officials claim were “significant philosophical differences with the direction, goals, and values of the school district.”
The MassGOP chairman said he “simply could not remain silent any longer” and cautioned that Flynn’s dismissal, despite a track record of success, is an intimidation tactic.
“Either submit to the far-left’s moral enforcement authority, or ‘you’re finished,’ that’s the message this is designed to send,” Lyons said. “And if people don’t speak out about this, it’s going to metastasize.”
Lyons said he’s heard from several individuals close to Flynn who have confirmed that the longtime coach, a Dedham resident himself, was dismissed less than a month before the start of the rescheduled football season because he voiced concerns about the ongoing politicization of his 12-year-old daughter’s history class.
Flynn, in his role as a parent, reportedly objected to the instruction of critical race theory, racial identity politics, and propaganda distributed by left-wing political organizations.
“It should be disturbing to anyone regardless of political persuasion that a parent expressing concerns over their child’s education can be punished like this,” Lyons said. “Sadly, the point of all of this is intimidation, and that needs to be called out for what it is.
“If people find themselves too afraid to speak out, incidents like this will sadly continue, and that is precisely why the Massachusetts Republican Party has decided to publicly and loudly denounce Coach Flynn’s dismissal.”
