John — Joe Biden said he would put science at the forefront of
his Presidency. Over the past few days, he’s nominated a historic slate of
immensely qualified scientists and STEM professionals to serve in his
White House.
Dr. Eric Lander, the Presidential Science Adviser Biden will be elevating
to a Cabinet-level position once confirmed and who will lead his team, is
a globally recognized geneticist who helped map the human genome, teaches
at both MIT and Harvard, and was recognized by TIME as one of the 100 most
influential people for his contributions to science.
Both of the scientists Biden named to be Co-Chairs of the President’s
science advisory counsel are women: Dr. Frances Arnold is the recipient of
the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Dr. Maria Zuber served as the Vice
President for Research at MIT.
Two of the highest ranking positions on this team, the Deputy Director for
Science and Society as well as the Legislative Affairs Director, will be
women of color: Dr. Alondra Nelson is the current President of the Social
Science Research Council and Narda Jones serves as a Senior Technology
Policy Advisor on the Senate’s science committee.
Both Dr. Anthony Fauci, now Biden’s personal medical adviser, and Dr.
Francis Collins, the Director of the National Institutes of Health, have
been selected to continue serving in the White House.
After four years of science denial and conspiracy theories, the White
House will have one of the most qualified science team’s in our country’s
history:
