In his inaugural address, President Joe Biden spoke eloquently against white supremacy, domestic terrorism, and political extremism -- and Republicans are upset.
Senator Rand Paul claimed, “If you read his speech and listen to it carefully, much of it is thinly veiled innuendo, calling us white supremacists, calling us racists, calling us every name in the book.” The threats that Biden spoke against should be easy to condemn -- and the fact that the GOP instead viewed Biden's words as an attack on them is very telling.
If someone says “We need to fight against white supremacy” and you say “that's an attack against me!” -- you might be a white supremacist.
At Progressive Majority, we truly believe that we have the opportunity to overcome racism and extremism in our new presidential administration. We have the White House, the House, and the Senate on our side -- as well as 81 million Americans who voted for change.
But it'll be an uphill battle if Republicans in Congress won't even tolerate discussion of these very real threats.
We need to start mobilizing now if we want to rid our government of those who would deny that political extremism exists in our country, even after the Capitol insurrection. We need to build up our funds, but unfortunately, we're falling short of our goal.
