Dear Friend, When President Biden announced his immigration plan last week I was happy he addressed the root causes driving families to leave their homes in Central America. But I know from our brothers and sisters organizing for change in El Salvador that foreign aid often never reaches the communities that need it most, or worse, lines the pockets of corrupt officials. That is why we’re urging President Biden to send more aid through civic organizations and to condition any money given to governments in the region on reopening anti-corruption agencies that were shut down last year with the tacit support of the Trump Administration. Please sign our petition to President Biden. Support our effort to address the root causes of poverty, unemployment, climate change, corruption, and violence forcing so many people to leave home. Over the past decade, I've been blessed to visit with many grassroots leaders in El Salvador and Guatemala organizing for clean water, jobs for young people, deeds to their property, and health clinics. These changes help people see a future for themselves in their own communities. The exodus of thousands of refugees from Honduras this month is a result of environmental destruction and corruption at the highest levels of society, including the Honduran President being accused by U.S. prosecutors of drug trafficking. People have a right to seek refuge when they’ve lost everything. But they also have a right to live safely in their own communities. Our message to President Biden is simple: listen to and stand with grassroots leaders working to improve their communities, fight corruption and protect their land from environmental abuse. Thanks for adding your name to this effort. Blessings, Fr. John Baumann Founder Faith in Action |
