The Senate tabled an effort by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to force a vote on the constitutionality of Trump's impeachment trial

Welcome to Wednesday, January 27th, elves and goblins...

The Senate voted 55-45 to table an effort by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to force a vote on the constitutionality of former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial

The vote went mostly along party lines, with all Democrats voting to table the point of order and four Republican senators joining them, including Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Ben Sasse (R-NE), and Pat Toomey (R-PA).

The Senate then voted on organizing resolution for the impeachment trial, which passed on a bipartisan 83-17 vote. A two-thirds majority will be required to convict former President Donald Trump.

Paul argued after the vote that the fact that 45 Republicans sided with him "shows that impeachment is dead on arrival."

"If you voted that it was unconstitutional then how in the world would you ever hope to convict somebody for this? 45 of us, almost the entire caucus, 95% of the caucus, voted that the whole proceeding was unconstitutional. This is a big victory for us. Democrats can beat this partisan horse as long as they want—this vote indicates it's over, the trial is all over."

** The Tubman $20
------------------------------------------------------------

The Biden administration is reviving efforts to put escaped slave and abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill after the Trump treasury delayed the move.

Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH), chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, announced Monday that she plans to re-introduce the Woman on the Twenty Act of 2021, which would require any $20 bill printed after 2024 to "prominently feature" a portrait of Tubman.

"I look forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration, including the first-ever female secretary of treasury, Janet Yellen ([link removed]) , to put a woman on the twenty and make the Tubman twenty a reality."

** Yes, Yellen
------------------------------------------------------------

As mentioned above, the Senate voted 84-15 to confirm Janet Yellen as Treasury Secretary—the first woman to hold the post.

Yellen, 74, was the first woman to chair the Federal Reserve; a role she served in from 2014 to 2018 after she spent four years as vice-chair of the Fed’s Board of Governors during her second stint at the Fed.

The Dept. of the Treasury and its sub-agencies collect federal taxes, pay bills, manage the currency, government accounts, and the public debt. The Treasury also enforces financial and tax laws.
