AFSCME MD mourns loss of 3 more members to COVID A correctional maintenance officer in Baltimore City, a correctional officer in Hagerstown, and a facilities employee at the University of Maryland, College Park are all the latest AFSCME Maryland members to die from COVID. “As this global pandemic rages, and public health experts warn us that the most dangerous days are ahead, AFSCME Local 1072 continues its fight to ensure that our members at the University of Maryland College Park are equipped, informed, and safe,” said Local 1072 president Todd Holden. AFSCME Maryland reports that over 3,000 members have tested positive for COVID. “It is again so sad that we are at this junction once again,” said AFSCME Maryland president Patrick Moran. “It further demonstrates that the Hogan Administration and the USM only view our members as cogs in a machine. No matter how many get sick or die they continue to operate like business as usual.”
OPEIU scores organizing win at Emily’s ListOn Tuesday, Emily’s List management voluntarily recognized the Emily’s List staff union (Emily’s List Staff Unionize 12/17 UC) through a card-check process conducted by a neutral party; the employees will be represented by OPEIU Local 2 in the D.C. metropolitan area. Contract negotiations will begin in the coming weeks. Since its launch in mid-2019, more than 1,000 nonprofit workers at dozens of workplaces throughout the country have organized with NEU. During the COVID-19 pandemic, OPEIU organized 530 workers at 18 nonprofit workplaces. In more than half of these organizing campaigns, the employer agreed to voluntarily recognize the union through a card-check verification conducted by a neutral party. Emily’s List is a fundraising group that supports pro-choice women running for office.- AFL-CIO Daily Brief

"Let us be enraged about injustice, but let us not be destroyed by it."
Union Voice/Readers Write: Just a century off "I think you've got a typo in the date for the day the meat cutters' union received their charter," writes OPEIU Local 2 shop steward Lynn O'Brien. "Shouldn't it be 1897 instead of 1997?" Yes indeed it's 1897; thanks for the catch!
