Before Donald Trump, Americans leaders would address the United Nations
with words about justice, collaboration, and hope for the future. We would
set the course — a global agenda — towards international peace, economic
development, humanitarian relief, and our unifying cause of leaving this
world a better place than we found it.

The United Nations is a tool. One that be used to help open doors between
nations, foster competitive but not adversarial spirit, and face the
greatest challenges of human civilization by working together.

That’s why it pains me to see Donald Trump squander the international
leadership and spirit of community that has created so much good in the
world. Yes, the United Nations is not perfect — but it and our
international community is undeserving of the complete disregard and
brazen disdain that Trump openly displays while representing us all.

When Trump fails, we must rise. In the absence of his international
leadership, we cannot allow chaos to fill that void — that’s why I’m
forging ahead to build a bipartisan coalition to maintain the values of
international peace.

Trump had the entire leadership of the free world in one room. Just
imagine the issues that you would talk about in that context — averting
climate change, ending these endless wars, solving world hunger,
investment to create jobs for all, steps to deliver health care to those
who need it most, the list is nearly endless.

Instead, Trump attacked Iran. He questioned the power of global coalitions
and alliances. He used his platform to boost a message that functionally
demanded every nation look after themselves first, and the world second.

When Trump leaves office by 2020, we’ll have a lot of work to do to repair
our international leadership — and to restore the global efforts towards
building a future that is better for our children. And the best time to
start is right now.

In solidarity,

Ro
