Jack xxxxxx,
Texas Governor Greg Abbott is launching a cruel attack on Texans experiencing homelessness--yes, in the middle of a pandemic.
He’s currently working to roll back criminal justice reforms in Austin that decriminalized camping and provided pathways out of poverty for people who have lost their homes. Instead, he wants to unleash the police and put more Texans in jail--despite a pandemic ripping through our state and killings hundreds every day.
This is cruelty, plain and simple. Texans deserve better.
We need to make our voices heard today: criminalizing Texans experiencing homelessness is not an option. Add your name to call on Abbott to reverse this cruel policy immediately.
We need to support reforms that give Texans a pathway back to safe and affordable housing.
Two years ago, Austin rolled back laws that criminalized people experiencing homelessness. The result? More people are getting stable access to services they need and finding ways to rebuild their lives without the constant threat of police sending them to jail.
Now we have a pandemic, which has hurt poor people and people of color the most, forcing thousands to lose their homes. Hundreds of Texans are dying every day, and for many, jails and prisons have been a death sentence.
It’s easy for Greg Abbott to look the other way and let people experiencing homelessness go unseen, and unspoken for. This is a moment for solidarity and compassion.
Thank you for making your voice heard.
