“If that were me, a big Black man squaring off with a cop, I would be dead.”
-- Congressman Jamaal Bowman
January 6th, 2020
John,
Congressman Jamaal Bowman's words resonate with far too many of us.
We know exactly who incited the violence on January 6th, and we know why they did it. But the question of how white supremacists were able to violently penetrate the Capitol and get past Capitol police remains unanswered.
It remains blatantly obvious that police were never here to keep us safe -- we keep us safe.
That's why we need to pass Congressman Bowman's first bill, the COUP Act, which would require a deep, thorough investigation into the security failures at Capitol Hill during the insurrection. The ties between any Capitol Police officer(s) and white supremacy or fascism
must come to light.
It's long overdue that police are held accountable. We need to raise our voices in support of the COUP Act -- to remind members of Congress that they cannot simply sweep the events of January 6th under the rug. We will only have unity if there are healing and accountability.
We've made it really easy to speak with your elected officials and demand they support the COUP Act to hold Capitol police accountable. Click here to call your member(s) of Congress >>
John, we see this every day. Police are quick to incite violence on our movement in the name of Black lives but are overwhelmingly prepared to abet and protect white supremacists. They posed for pictures with them at the Capitol that day. They invited them inside to destroy the Capitol and risked the lives of countless lawmakers, staffers, families, and more.
We need answers, and we won't stop until we get them. We need to let each and every one of our representatives know they must support the COUP Act in Congress so that the Capitol police officers involved with the coup will be held accountable to the highest standards.
Call your representative(s) NOW -- because accountability cannot wait.
We refuse to allow another instance in which police are protected and not held accountable for their actions.
In love and solidarity,
