Subject: Why I'm leading on the For the People Act and how you can help:

Friend,

This month has demonstrated the fragility, resiliency, and great possibility of our democracy.

The first week tested us -- the insurrectionists at the U.S. Capitol showed us just how fragile our democracy is. The second week, we began to hold accountable those who encouraged that insurrection, beginning with Donald Trump's second impeachment. The third week, we inaugurated a new president and vice president and therefore, a new future for this country.

This week -- the fourth week -- we begin the work to rebuild, and build back better. That starts with the For the People Act, a bill that I co-sponsored in the House to reform, repair, and restore American democracy.

It's time to fulfill the promise we made to the American people and build back better -- are you with me? Add your name to support the For the People Act right now.

So what exactly is in the For the People Act? There are quite a few big priorities, but the one I'm focused on the most is campaign finance reform. The ethics and accountability piece ensures when members are elected, they work in their constituents' best interests, not their own. That means disclosure requirements so we know where dark money is coming from, reforming the FEC so that they can hold people accountable who break campaign finance rules, and one more thing I'm particularly excited about.

The For the People Act also sets up a small-dollar donor matching system of public financing so regular people -- not millionaires and billionaires -- can run for office. That's public investment in the legislative process, and I couldn't be more excited.

Over the last two years, I know so many of us have been looking for ways to preserve John Lewis' legacy, and that's what the For the People Act does. It includes a set of reforms to make it easier for all Americans to vote. Based off of John Lewis' signature legislation, the Voter Empowerment Act, support and passage of the For the People Act is central to preserving and carrying forward his legacy.

There's also a set of reforms about political gerrymandering and setting up a process that's fairer in establishing congressional districts. Based on foreign interference on our election structures over the past few years, we have to fortify these systems so they're more resilient -- and that's what this act will do.

That's a lot of information, but the For the People Act does so much -- and so much of it is about people just like you, and making it easier for you to vote and have representatives that work for you. I hope you'll join me in voicing your support right now: Add your name to support the For the People Act right now.

Thank you,

Dean Phillips
