Dr. Evers is a nationally-respected specialist in curriculum and educational opportunity. He joins the Independent Institute after two decades as a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He also served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education, Senior Adviser to both former U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq. He was also the lead member of the Trump-Pence transition team for the U.S. Department of Education.

You may have seen that Dr. Evers triggered a firestorm of concern about California’s proposed “ethnic studies” curriculum with his Wall Street Journal article from July 29, 2019, entitled “California Wants to Teach Your Kids That Capitalism Is Racist.” He demonstrated that the new model curriculum, drawn up by California’s Department of Education, was a handbook for classroom propagandizing. Dr. Evers’ article helped rally parents, teachers and others to protest, causing state bureaucrats to withdraw the proposal for at least a year’s worth of consultation and revisions.
Dr. Evers will lead the Independent Institute's educational endeavors including: a campaign to bring Education Savings Accounts to California, and the production and publication of our upcoming book with renowned “low-cost, high quality” private school researcher Dr. James N. Tooley, among others. These initiatives will demonstrate how alternative education providers can resolve the serious problems in education. They will be a rallying point for parents exasperated with the waste, inadequacy, and propaganda coming out of public schools.
