** Counting Down the Days!
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Allies,
We are mere days away from what could be the start of rolling back the public charge rule, as President Biden is expected ([link removed]) to issue an Executive Order on Friday. For years, the PIF network has been fighting against the Trump-era public charge regulations through community education, research, litigation, and federal advocacy, and it has paid off. We are immensely proud of this network, and are looking forward to celebrating with you all on Friday!
This week, we are excited to share updates about what we expect to see on Friday, plus a set of sample tweets for you to use and adapt in preparation for Friday’s announcement.
** What We’re Expecting in Friday’s EO
------------------------------------------------------------
Along with several other immigration-themed Executive Orders we will be keeping an eye on, we anticipate President Biden to announce that his administration will take action to reverse the public charge rule. The Trump-era public charge regulations have chilled millions of immigrants and their families from accessing the critical economic and healthcare support that they need, especially during a global pandemic. We could not be more excited that this rule we have all fought against for years is finally in motion to be reversed!
On Friday, we’ll share more information about the expected Executive Order, including what it does and what we’re hoping to see next in the administrative process of reversing Trump’s public charge regulations.
** Monday, 2/1: PIF Tweetstorm
------------------------------------------------------------
In response to the Executive Order on public charge that we are expecting on Friday, the PIF team is also tentatively planning a tweetstorm for Monday, February 1st from 2-3pm ET, using PIF’s #ProtectFamilies hashtag. To make it easier for partners to participate, we’ve prepared a set of sample tweets ([link removed]) , which also includes a list of priority lawmakers partners can tag, in addition to their own congressional delegation. Please join us for the tweetstorm if you can, and please continue to share your support and thanks on social media, after the Executive Order is released.
** Public Charge in the News
------------------------------------------------------------
* LA Times ([link removed]) – Quotes NILC and others on Biden’s planned legalization bill proposal, also noting that he can act without waiting for Congress on other priorities, including public charge.
* Boston Globe ([link removed]) – Hundreds of Massachusetts medical professionals sign a letter urging state leaders to prioritize Black and immigrant residents in COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
* Fast Company ([link removed]) – Citing public charge as one obstacle to COVID-19 vaccination efforts and quoting NYIC and DC’s La Clinica del Pueblo.
In Solidarity,
Eddie Carmona & Renato Rocha, on behalf of the PIF Team
