John,
Elections have consequences. And the Biden administration is already showing the sharp contrast with the Trump administration. On Friday, at the end of Biden’s first week as President, the new administration withdrew 3 deadly last-minute rules that Trump’s Social Security Administration had been pushing.1
This is what we worked so hard for―but this is just the start. As long as Trump’s SSA appointees remain in place, our earned benefits are under threat. Can you chip in $5 to Social Security Works’ Clean House at SSA campaign?
Trump nominees Andrew Saul and David Black are still at the Social Security Administration, serving as Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, respectively. Biden indicated last week that he considers Saul only an Acting Commissioner who “will temporarily lead federal agencies while nominees continue moving through the confirmation process.”2
Biden must move swiftly. President Obama’s nominee for SSA Commissioner was never confirmed, meaning that we’ve only had a Democratic-nominated, Senate-confirmed SSA commissioner for 8 of the last 40 years. During this time, the Republican assault on our earned benefits has only intensified.
President Biden has a lot on his plate right now. He shouldn’t have to worry about Trump’s SSA Commissioner sabotaging Social Security right under his nose.
Social Security Works is leading the charge to insist that Social Security have new leadership that believes in our Social Security system. Chip in $5 to our Clean House at SSA Campaign!
Saul and Black have the rare distinction of being rebuked by the unions that represent the employees at the Social Security Administration.3 Generally, employee unions try to make nice with management because they’ll have to keep working together―but this rebuke shows that there’s no working with these guys. They’ve got to go!
Together, we’ll make that happen.
Thanks,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works
