Jack, the MAGA crowd that stormed the Capitol on January 6 was not spontaneous. They showed up with knowledge of the Capitol floor plan, walkie talkies to communicate with, zip ties to restrain captives, along with bats, pipes, and other objects to inflict damage. The goal was to prevent the certification of Joe Biden's victory, and allow Donald Trump to stay in power despite the results of the election and the will of the people.
This was a major attack on the institutions of our democracy. Those responsible, including Trump, must be held accountable for their involvement.
Opening statements of the Senate impeachment trial are set for February 9. This time, there is a real chance--a small one, but a real one--that we will win and Trump will be convicted. Here are five reasons why:
-
The Articles of Impeachment passed the House with ten Republicans in support; the most bipartisan impeachment vote in our history.
-
Democrats now control a narrow 51-50 majority in the U.S. Senate, whereas in early 2020 Republicans held a 52-48 edge.
-
Further, compared to the last time Trump was impeached, far fewer Republican Senators are pre-emptively supporting and defending him.
-
A handful of Republican senators have already indicated that they believe Trump committed impeachable offenses.
-
Even Mitch McConnell has said that he believes that Trump provoked the insurrection and that a vote to convict should be a vote of conscience.
This could actually happen. However, this does not mean that we will have an easy road ahead of us. Assuming that all 50 Democratic Senators vote to convict, we will still need to convince and pressure 17 Republican Senators to hold Trump accountable by voting to convict him and disqualify him from ever holding federal office again.
Since the day of the attacks on the Capitol, January 6, the Daily Kos community has taken nearly 1.9 million actions -- signed a petition, sent a letter or called their member of Congress -- demanding that those responsible for the attacks, including Trump, be held accountable. We need to keep up this pressure as the impeachment trial approaches so that all 100 U.S. senators know their constituents expect them to convict and disqualify Trump. As an organization primarily funded by grassroots donations, we can't do this without the support from readers and activists like you, Jack. Please help us convict and disqualify Trump from ever holding office again by giving $5 today.
Keep fighting,
Amanda McKay, Daily Kos
