Just days before the election, Trump, throwing red meat to his base, removed lifesaving protection from wolves across the lower 48.

Already states are rushing to hold trophy hunts for the first time in years.

So we've gone to court to restore wolves' Endangered Species Act protection — and keep them from being persecuted for sport and fur.

State wildlife managers in the Great Lakes states are dead set on killing wolves — and some states, like Wisconsin, are already planning new hunts. Some officials there tried to open up wolf hunting and trapping this winter, just as wolves began their breeding season.

We spoke out against this dangerous threat, and on Friday plans for the winter hunt were rejected…by a single vote.

We have to be on guard at all times to stop efforts like this, because trophy hunters and anti-wildlife forces won't stop their brutal attacks, leaving packs decimated and wolves suffering.

Though the effort to hunt and trap Wisconsin's wolves this winter failed, its fall hunt is still on. Our latest legal action for wolves is our best chance to restore protection, and our year-round mobilizing on the ground will ensure that those who treasure wolves and wildlife will be heard.

Beating back attacks on wolves and other species requires dogged work in the courts, testifying at hearings at every level of government, and grassroots campaigning.

This is what it takes to end the extinction crisis.

Our task now is to reverse the damage done in the past four years — not just to wolves, but to wildlife across the country and to the Endangered Species Act itself. We're going to have to fight hard to restore safeguards our wild creatures and wild places lost under Trump.

Over the past 30 years, the Center has locked in protections for 723 species and more than half a billion acres of habitat.
