Tonight, the US Senate will receive the House-passed article of impeachment of former President Donald Trump -- the only president in our history to have been impeached twice.

This is an unprecedented process and, in many ways, we are in uncharted waters. But the crime at the center of this impeachment is also unprecedented.

Let's be clear: the then-sitting President of the United States is charged with inciting an insurrection against our government in an attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election.

It doesn't get much worse than that. If a president can't keep his oath to "protect and defend" our country against enemies foreign and domestic -- well, then our system of government can't work.

This should not be a partisan issue. In order to move our country forward after this unprecedented attack, we need to have accountability.

The investigation into the attack on the US Capitol is still in its early stages. This appears to have been a deep and broad conspiracy involving Donald Trump, his close associates, and allies within different parts of the Executive Branch, as well as funding provided to outside groups that violently stormed our government. Without consequences, this could happen again.

Justice must be served so democracy can prevail.
