A mentor of mine, Senator George McGovern, often said "We cannot change the past; we can only shape the future." Last week, with the inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris, the country committed to shaping a better future for us all.
A future where we mend the cracks in our nation by restoring the rule of law and the balance of power.
Where we contain the coronavirus pandemic and respect science.
Where we confront the pain of systemic racism and create policies that lift up all people who call this country home.
Where we reduce our carbon footprint and restart our economy by rebuilding our infrastructure.
And where we once again follow our better angels by committing to address hunger, homelessness, and human rights.
Four years of the Trump administration's casual cruelty and shameless lies have left our nation wounded, confused, and anxious. And while we can't change what's brought us here, we can move forward to repair the damage and to make sure that no leader can ever drag us this low again.
It's barely been a few days, and the healing's already begun. Our best days are ahead of us; I'm proud to be at your side as we march forward together.
In unity,
Jim
