Dear Transparency Advocate,

While the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) investigates the money trail surrounding the violent events at the Capitol and documents it on our website, OpenSecrets.org, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to send charges to the Senate today for the unprecedented second impeachment of a U.S. president.

On Friday OpenSecrets reported that former President Trump’s campaign had paid out more than $2.7 million to several individuals and firms that organized the January 6 rally that preceded insurrectionists storming Capitol Hill. The article was cited widely including major media outlets such as Bloomberg, The Hill, and others.

The full extent of the Trump campaign’s ties to the protests may not be fully known because of its use of shell companies to hide details of its financial dealings. Congress recently passed legislation requiring shell companies to disclose the identities of their true owners as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. Trump vetoed the bill – which was overwhelmingly overridden in Congress with bipartisan support. Counting and reporting on cash can indeed make change.

With your support OpenSecrets will persist in our investigations, and be able to keep you informed about nondisclosing groups through the impeachment trial and beyond.
Stay connected with us as we compile post-election data, and continue to track and uncover these secret efforts to influence our political system and challenge democratic norms.

Please consider a donation to support OpenSecret’s work so that we can be a watchdog for transparency and accountability now – and whenever democracy is tested.
