John,
In just a couple hours, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is transmitting the article of impeachment against former President Trump to the Senate, setting the stage for a trial to begin just two weeks from now.
When the House impeached Donald Trump, just days after he incited a violent insurrection to try to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election, he was still in office. We acted, with ten Republican members joining us, because impeachment is the remedy the Constitution provides for such grave misconduct, and we believed that every day Trump remained in office he was a danger to the country.
The Senate did not act quickly enough on impeachment to remove Donald Trump from the White House, but this impeachment is still critical. First, Donald Trump betrayed his oath of office, again, and he needs to be held accountable. And second, the Constitution specifically provides Congress the option to not only remove from office, but also bar someone from ever holding office again. But most important, we cannot establish the precedent that a president in their last weeks in office can seek to prevent the peaceful transition of power, and if they succeed, they are president for life, and if they fail, there are no repercussions and they may try again later. That would only add to the danger.
Disappointingly, though not surprisingly, some Republicans are already fighting back against the upcoming Senate impeachment trial, with Sen. Marco Rubio calling the trial “stupid” and Sen. John Cornyn threatening to impeach past Democratic presidents. After everything, including a violent insurrection that put their lives at risk, they’ve somehow learned nothing.
I know that our phenomenal team of House Impeachment Managers are preparing to explain to the Senate exactly why Donald Trump’s abuses demand that they convict.
Add your name to my petition urging the Senate to do the right thing, hold Trump accountable, and stand up for our democracy. [[link removed]]

This is our chance to prove that no one, not even the president, is above the law. Even if they abuse their power in their last days in office. And especially when they incite a violent mob to attack our nation’s Capitol.
