Exxon has been a sponsor of the notorious race for more than four decades, and this latest victory for dogs is a wonderful example of the power of PETA’s multifaceted campaigns. We mobilized nearly 100,000 kind people to demand that the oil giant cut ties with the torturous 1,000-mile race, which has already killed more than 150 dogs—many died after inhaling their own vomit.
We organized “Closed for Cruelty” protests outside dozens of gas stations and ExxonMobil’s headquarters, plastered gas pumps across the U.S. with “ExxonEvil” stickers, placed eye-catching billboards and bus ads, and more.
PETA’s corporate team submitted a shareholder resolution urging the company to stop sponsoring activities in which animals are exploited, abused, and killed. As a result, we met with Exxon leadership who confirmed that they would end their support of the Iditarod.
ExxonMobil is the latest corporation to change its ways after determined PETA pressure, and every day, we’re showing forward-thinking companies why they should never associate with cruelty.
Today, our online campaigns, creative protests, and shareholder activism are turning up the heat on Canada Goose to stop abusing coyotes and geese. The horse racing industry is feeling the pressure as never before, too, thanks to our shareholder resolutions, demonstrations outside tracks, and online campaigning.
We’re stopping the abuse and hitting hard at the Iditarod and any other form of entertainment that uses animals, but we must do more.
Together, we can accomplish more landmark changes for animals.
Thank you for your compassion.
Kind regards,
Tracy Reiman
Executive Vice President
