The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real— it's surging to record levels in Los Angeles, the US, and the world.
We need to be extra vigilant and mitigate the risks of infection, particularly for those who are older or who have pre-existing conditions. For the sake of our collective health, please remember to wear a mask when you leave your home, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently. This pandemic has shown us that the health of one is the health of all so we all need to take responsibility for our common well-being.
There are some easy ways to safely stay connected to the chapter, such as: signing-up on the front page of our website to receive our weekly newsletter, checking the calendar on the site for upcoming virtual events, and joining DSA-LA’s Slack.

But if you're interested in getting to know other members of the chapter, sign up for our newbie meetup program— a social event series starting in February! Just pick the day/time that works for you and commit to 3 weekly sessions in a row. There's no strict agenda or planned outcomes; we're just creating spaces for members to talk to other members. Political Education Committee Facilitator Training |

The Facilitator Training, hosted by the Political Education Committee, will teach you techniques for leading groups discussions, both online and in person. The key questions that will be answered by this training are: • Why is political education important? • What is the role of the facilitator? • What are concrete tools to facilitate? • How can I address common roadblocks to a conversation that flows? The skills and tools covered in this training are applicable in any meeting where participants will be discussing new ideas, so we welcome anyone interested in learning more about facilitation. Participants are encouraged to read through this short article on the importance of Political Education before the training. |

Labor Circles: Socialist Workplace Organizing in Los Angeles |

Socialists understand that our politics have to extend beyond the ballot box — we also have to see our workplaces, where as workers we can exert our power over economy, as a key site of economic struggle. But what does this practically look like? And how can someone get started in engaging with workplace struggle? Join us on a late Saturday morning as members of our Labor Circles initiative – a program aimed at helping DSA members engage in workplace organizing – talk about their experiences over the last year. Discussions will include running for elected positions in unions, building socialist networks in industries, and organizing new unions with your coworkers. We will spend the last part of the meeting in breakout groups, where you can talk with current labor circle members or work on building your own! |

Are you new or newly returning to DSA? To Los Angeles? To the Left? Then join us for DSA 101! At this orientation, we’ll talk about what capitalism is, how it functions, and why socialism is ideologically opposed to it. Participants will also learn about the history of our organization and our chapter in particular, the current projects we’re working on, and how you can get involved. This is not a lecture, but a meeting for new and veteran organizers. We’re excited to chat with you! Preregistration for this event is required. Street Watch Annual Retreat |

Street Watch has exploded in growth over the past year and expanded our work in several areas, from more robust mutual aid and outreach practices to deeper organizing with unhoused communities across the County and deepening political education in our organizing spaces. We’ve doubled our membership, started new locals, and voted to pass bylaws to make our meetings more democratic and participatory. With all this growth in mind, it’s time to come together and take stock of where we’re at and how we can continue to grow and strengthen our organizing. Join us for the first annual Street Watch retreat to reflect on our work over the past year, strategize about the upcoming year, and connect as a community. This event will be dynamic and participatory, with a keynote speaker, large group discussions, political education, activities, and more. If you have not attended a Street Watch meeting in the past, we would recommend attending an upcoming New Member Intro or reaching out to us individually at [email protected]. |
