Dear friend,
“The job of the Department of Defense is to keep America safe from our enemies,” says Lloyd Austin, President Biden's pick for Secretary of Defense, “we can't do that if some of those enemies lie within our own ranks.”
This rise of extremism in our military comes as no surprise to us.
Trump's tyranny has left our country vulnerable to radical right takeover. Without direct action, his influence will continue to infiltrate and destabilize the very democratic institutions our country so desperately depends on to function. If Trump's extremist legacy is not extinguished quickly, fascism and corruption will continue to thrive -- and our country will continue to backtrack.
We know what we need to do: Hold Trump's remaining allies in government accountable, pass progressive legislation to better the quality of life for all Americans, and continue to support Democrats in their elections against the GOP.
But GOP extremists are gearing up to run in 2022, and state party leaders have promised to double down on Trump's platform in the coming months. Arizona Republicans have even pledged to continue to distance themselves from any representative who has not declared themselves a Trump loyalist.
