** A Message from the DCYR Executive Board:
------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings to all our friends, members, and supporters!
We hope that you all had a safe and wonderful holiday season spent in the company of loved ones, either virtually or in-person.
By now, many of you have either returned to DC following the holidays, or might now live in a new city or town. Whatever your circumstances may be, we welcome you to a new year that will have its fair share of challenges, but also opportunities for engagement and activation. We will continue to adapt to meet the needs of our membership.
To that end, here are a few top-line points the board would like to highlight.
Summary - Year in Review:
We all know 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year. Everyone has their unique story of hardship and struggle. Thousands have lost their jobs. Hundreds of small businesses have closed their doors - in some cases, for good. We continue to keep in our thoughts those within our membership who have lost their jobs and the restaurants & businesses who have graciously hosted us in the past.
We are faced with a new set of realities in 2021.
Last Wednesday was the Inauguration of President Joe Biden; a ceremony that showcased the democratic peaceful transfer of power, like it has following every election since John Adams peacefully transferred power to Thomas Jefferson following the election of 1800.
Like many, we were greatly disappointed by the outcome of the Georgia senate runoff elections. Hundreds of Young Republicans made calls and flew to Georgia to knock doors in the Atlanta suburbs. In the end, we came up short - but it was not due to lack of effort!
For the first time since 2009, Republicans find themselves in the minority of both chambers of Congress.
Now, our work begins. Today, we take our first step to laying the groundwork to win back the House, the Senate and our state legislatures in 2022. We must also step up to serve as a counterbalance to a city council & government that has drastically moved to the far-left. It is imperative that we get Republicans elected to stop these socialist policies & programs from ever passing into law.
Now is the time for young republicans to come together in common cause. We now have an opportunity to return to basics and start anew. At this very moment, we, the Young Republicans, are the future of the party, and we have a duty & responsibility in forging that future - together.
Capitol Hill Riots:
On January 6th, our community bore witness to the horrifying events that unfolded on Capitol Hill. Several of our members found themselves locking down in the house & senate office buildings, as they waited for the rioters to be cleared from the Capitol Hill Complex. This is not a sign of a healthy democracy.
The DCYR Executive Board categorically and unequivocally condemn these actions, as well as any and all forms of politically motivated violence and destruction. This applies to both the events of January 6th and the weeks of rioting and looting that took place in our city that was permitted - and even endorsed - by our media and our city’s elected officials.
Please read below the statement issued in response to the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th:
"The DC Young Republicans condemn the actions of those who took part in the storming of the U.S. Capitol Complex. Today’s actions are not who we are as a country. We pray for peace and the safety of our members who work and live on Capitol Hill, for all of those in DC and for the future of our country."
The Future of the DC Young Republicans:
It’s been over 10 months since our last in-person meeting at the Capitol Hill Club. It’s been since October that we’ve held a virtual for our membership. The change from in-person to virtual certainly took time to adjust. We’ve adapted and have gotten creative in the ways we communicate with our members over Zoom and Facebook Live. We started a podcast that featured locally and regionally-recognized republican figures and voices to bring directly to you in a unique way. Your executive board has been dedicated to keeping your state federation alive and operational.
That is why we are encouraging our members to renew their membership and update their information going into the new year. Your membership dues and ongoing support go to sustaining our organization’s mandate of recruiting, training & supporting the next generation of candidates & leaders in our party.
There is much to be hopeful for. With the rapid distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, there is a real possibility that things like in-person meetings, events & deployments will begin to return by this summer at the earliest. The executive board has been working on new programming and initiatives over the holiday season. This includes service opportunities, a return to monthly meetings, and more.
We encourage everyone to be an active participant in our organization, and we once again welcome you to 2021.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you all in the new year.
