Millions have lost their jobs. More than 400,000 have died from COVID. We need a relief plan now.

Friend,

I hope you got a chance to read the email below from EPI Director of Research Josh Bivens, which details why we need to pass a comprehensive plan for relief and recovery, and why President Biden’s proposed "American Rescue Plan" is a right benchmark for policymakers.

Read Josh’s email, and then take a moment to send a letter to your members of Congress calling for quick passage of a comprehensive COVID relief package, which will put our country on the road to recovery. ([link removed])

When the plan was announced, President Biden said, "The very health of our nation is at stake. We have to act and we have to act now."

Together, we must get Congress to act. Millions of people across our country are depending on it. ([link removed])

Thank you for all you do to lift up working families who are struggling to make ends meet during this terrible pandemic.

Tell Congress:

Pass a relief and recovery bill at least on the scale of President Biden’s proposed American Rescue Plan. A comprehensive plan is urgently needed to combat the pandemic, distribute the vaccine, and help struggling families and communities recover from the pandemic recession which has cost millions of people their jobs.

Friend,

We are facing stark challenges as a nation. More than 400,000 Americans have already died from COVID-19. Just this week, President Joe Biden shared that this staggering death toll is expected to be more than 500,000 by next month.[1]

The economic devastation is also dire. Another 1.3 million people applied for unemployment insurance benefits ([link removed]) the week of Jan. 11, the 44th week in a row claims were worse than the Great Recession. Month after month, families throughout our country are struggling to feed their families and pay the bills.

Immediate action is needed.

President Biden is pushing for the swift passage of his administration's first legislative proposal, a $1.9 trillion COVID relief package, titled the "American Rescue Plan." This plan meets the scale of today’s challenges and learns from past mistakes when policymakers went too-small in confronting a crisis.

Even in the years before the Covid-19 crisis we suffered from a too-cold economy for far too long—it’s time to repair the damage and then turn up the heat. A lot. To its credit, the Biden relief and recovery plan aims to do this.

Some critics of ambitious relief and recovery plans may complain that they could cause "overheating." Economic "overheating" generally means a large and prolonged increase in inflation and/or interest rates, but the U.S. economy has run far "too cold" for decades, largely due to the enormous rise in income inequality redistributing income to richer households that save most of their income.

Any relief and recovery plan sufficient for today’s challenges must take critical steps to help our country respond to the pandemic―which is spiraling out of control with more than 4,000 deaths each day―and stop the economic damage that is leaving millions of Americans behind.

The American Rescue Plan does this, and also provides critical aid to renters, people threatened with or experiencing homelessness, households unable to pay heat or water bills, and offers an extension of the eviction and foreclosure moratoria. President Biden has put forth a rescue package that is at scale and ticks many of the crucial boxes needed to restore health to the American public and the economy. It would fund vaccinations and contain the virus, deliver direct, immediate relief to those hardest hit, and support struggling communities. Friend, will you take 2-minutes to read the details of the plan and send a letter to your members of Congress to call for the immediate passage of the American Rescue Plan. ([link removed])

Thank you for all you do to fight for an economy that works for all of us, not just the privileged few.
