We hope you've heard the news: Joe Biden has tapped Dr. Rachel Levine as his assistant health secretary -- and she is now set to make history as the country's first openly transgender Cabinet member to be confirmed by the Senate.
We couldn't think of a better person for the role.
Dr. Levine has been a steady and reliable health advocate in Pennsylvania, receiving a hearty congratulations from PA Governor Tom Wolf for “bringing national awareness to opioid use disorder, and highlighting and promoting the need for adequate medical care and access for the LGBTQ community,” as well as her calm, science-based approach to managing the COVID-19 pandemic.
While we're excited to see Dr. Levine leading us at the national level, we know she will now become a target for further transphobic abuse. As PA Secretary of Health, Dr. Levine faced constant attacks, with radio hosts consistently misgendering her and elected officials disgustingly saying they were “tired of listening to a guy dressed up like a woman.”
Rep. Brian Sims put it best when he said that “Republicans still deny her basic equality, and she focuses on saving their lives.” Today, we need to know if, like us, you are celebrating Dr. Levine's appointment and are ready to support her as she continues saving lives:
