As we turn the page and welcome the next presidential administration, we must remember that accountability will help bring unity. President Trump was not the only one who encouraged right-wing militants to attack the Capitol on January 6th. By his side were 139 House Republicans who voted to overturn the will of the people. They voted to disenfranchise millions of voters in Arizona and Pennsylvania, and undermine the results of a free and fair election. They fed into conspiracy theories, fomented lies and mistrust, and now bare responsibility for the violence committed against our nation’s principles. They must be held accountable for attempting to subvert our democracy.

After taking back the House in 2018, and winning the White House and flipping the Senate in 2020, we’ve seen how important raising early money can be. That’s why we’re launching our new Defend Democracy Fund—where 100% of your donation will go to the eventual Democratic nominees running in the most competitive races to defeat those who voted to overturn the election results. Between gerrymandering, redistricting, and the ever-changing dynamics of American politics, it can be hard to figure out how to get involved. But if we wait until everything is set in stone before we start organizing and raising money, it will be too late. We must hold the House majority in 2022, and we must make the GOP pay for attacking our democracy. Thankfully, we can do both those things at the same time by defeating anyone who voted to undermine election results, running in a competitive district.

As President Biden included in his inaugural address, democracy prevailed this year. But as the events of the past month show us, it is still fragile. This is a turning point, and we’re going to keep fighting.
