New Resources from CDT Address Evolving Privacy Considerations for Technology & Data in Education During COVID-19

The spring term is well underway in schools across the country. With COVID-19 still rampant across most of the U.S., educators continue to rely heavily on data sharing and technology to facilitate safe learning. The use of these tools is hardly new at this point, but the landscape of legal, technical, and policy-related responses is raising novel questions about the proper relationship between education agencies, edtech companies, and other parties.

Today, CDT’s Student Privacy Project is releasing a batch of new resources to address some of these issues. These resources cover questions of data ethics, legal compliance, and best practices around data-sharing or technology procurement. The releases are:

By staying up-to-date with legal and technical best practices for protecting student privacy, education practitioners can ensure that their technology plans remain legally compliant and continue to provide students with safe, effective instruction while protecting their privacy. REMINDER: The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) is partnering with the National Education Association (NEA) to co-host a webinar tomorrow discussing digital equity and student privacy.

We’ll discuss how education practitioners can design solutions to combat digital inequities that promote thoughtful community engagement and ensure strong privacy protection. We’ll also hear how educators in the field are navigating these issues amidst the other challenges of the COVID pandemic, and how policymakers and practitioners can best support their students’ needs.

Speakers: Elizabeth Laird, Director of Equity in Civic Technology at CDT, will join experts from NEA to explore recent research findings on teachers’ perceptions of school technology, student data privacy, digital access inequities, and community outreach.
