Anonymous, This summer, 500 million bees died in just three months.1 The year before, we lost 40 percent of all honeybee colonies in the United States.2 We're losing bees at an alarming rate. That's why Environment Colorado is pulling out all the stops to go big on our campaign to save the bees -- and we've set a goal of raising $20,000 by midnight on September 30 to make sure that we have the resources we need to win. Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem. They pollinate 71 of the 100 crops that make up 90 percent of our diets, from almonds to carrots to blueberries. Habitat loss and climate change are also hurting bee populations, but one of their biggest threats -- and one that we can stop right now -- is the widespread use of a class of bee-killing pesticides called neonicotinoids, or neonics for short. Neonics attack bees' brains, hurting their ability to navigate, altering their behavior -- even interfering with how they locate food.3 This summer, Environment Colorado and our national network put boots on the ground across the country calling on state leaders to support a ban on the worst uses of neonics. Our advocates went door to door, educating and engaging the public on this crisis. Nationwide, more than 131,000 Americans signed our petition to ban the worst uses of these bee-killing pesticides in their state. Donate to Environment Colorado today. We know that we can make a difference to save the bees. Maryland, Connecticut and Vermont have all passed statewide bans on consumer use of these pesticides in recent years, and Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon and California have taken steps to protect bees. Momentum is building. If enough states ban the worst uses of these pesticides, we can make Colorado, our country and our planet safer for bees. And, of course, we're still working to protect open spaces and clean air and water, but right now, we need to meet our goal so we can do everything it takes to save the bees before it is too late. We can't afford to lose the bees. Help us reach our goal. Donate today. Thanks for making it all possible, Hannah Collazo |
